CS2 Spray Control Practice

By Mustafa Bilgic · Updated 24 August 2026

CS2 spray control separates players who land kills at medium range from those who panic-spray and lose every duel. Each weapon has a fixed recoil pattern that pulls your crosshair in a predictable path, and mastering that path through deliberate practice is one of the fastest ways to climb ranks. Open the free trainer and start drilling right now.

Spray patterns are based on CS2 as of 2026. Valve may adjust weapon mechanics in future updates.

How CS2 Spray Patterns Work

Every automatic weapon in CS2 follows a set recoil pattern that is the same every time you hold down the fire button. The AK-47 kicks upward sharply for the first 10 bullets, then drifts left before swinging right. The M4A4 has a tighter vertical rise with a more subtle lateral shift. These patterns are not random; they are deterministic, which means you can learn them through muscle memory.

Your job is to move your mouse in the mirror image of the pattern while firing. Pull down to counteract the upward kick, then follow the left-right path in reverse. The first 5 to 7 bullets matter most because that is the window where you should be securing kills. If your spray extends beyond 15 rounds without a kill, you are likely better off resetting your position and tapping.

A Simple Spray Drill You Can Do Daily

Stand at medium range from a wall in a practice environment. Fire a full magazine without moving your mouse and observe the bullet decal pattern on the wall. That is what you need to counteract. Now fire again, this time pulling your crosshair in the opposite direction of each deviation. Compare the resulting decal pattern: a tight cluster means your compensation is on track.

Repeat this for 5 minutes with the AK-47 and 5 minutes with the M4A4 or M4A1-S before queuing for a match. Consistency matters more than duration. A short focused session every day will build more reliable muscle memory than an hour-long grind once a week. Track your cluster tightness over sessions to measure improvement rather than relying on feel alone.

Transferring Spray Control to Live Matches

Wall drills build the raw motor pattern, but live matches add variables: you are moving, your target is moving, and stress tightens your grip. Start by committing to spray transfers in deathmatch rather than competitive. Deathmatch removes rank anxiety and lets you focus purely on execution without worrying about the round outcome.

In competitive play, pick fights at ranges where your spray is reliable. If your AK control falls apart past 15 meters, hold angles where engagements happen closer. As your control improves, gradually take longer-range duels. Forcing yourself into uncomfortable ranges too early just builds bad habits. Let your effective spray distance expand naturally with practice.

Common Mistakes That Stall Progress

Over-correcting is the most frequent error. Players learn the general "pull down" concept and yank their mouse too far, sending bullets into the floor after the first few shots. The fix is subtlety: the compensation movement is smaller than most people expect, especially in the first 5 rounds where the recoil rise is moderate.

Another stall point is ignoring the lateral portion of the pattern. Many players nail the vertical pull but let the horizontal drift go uncontrolled, producing a vertical line of bullet holes instead of a tight cluster. If your decal pattern is a straight vertical line, you are only doing half the work. Focus specifically on the left-right transitions during your next drill session and you will see immediate cluster improvement.

Frequently asked questions

Are CS2 spray patterns the same as CS:GO?

The core recoil patterns carried over from CS:GO to CS2, but CS2 introduced subtick timing and updated smoke and rendering systems that can make sprays feel slightly different. The fundamental shapes are the same, so muscle memory from CS:GO still applies with minor adjustment.

How long does it take to learn spray control?

Most players see noticeable improvement within one to two weeks of daily 10-minute practice sessions. Full mastery across multiple weapons and ranges takes longer, but the AK-47 first-10-bullet pattern can become reliable in a short time with focused repetition.

Should I learn spray patterns for every weapon?

Start with the AK-47 and your preferred M4 variant since those are the most common rifles. Add the SG 553 or Galil if you buy them frequently. Pistol and SMG sprays are less critical because those engagements are typically shorter bursts.

Is spray control or crosshair placement more important?

Crosshair placement eliminates the need for spray control in many duels because a well-placed crosshair lands a headshot with the first bullet. But when you face multiple enemies or miss that initial shot, spray control keeps you in the fight. Train both.
