How the CPS test works
Pick a duration — 5, 10 or 30 seconds — press PLAY and click anywhere in the arena as fast as you can. The timer starts on your first click, so you lose nothing to a slow start. The live counter shows total clicks and your rolling 1-second burst; at the end you get average CPS, total clicks, your peak 1-second burst and a rank from Turtle to Godlike.
CPS benchmarks
| CPS (10s mode) | Rank | Typical technique |
|---|---|---|
| < 5 | Turtle | Casual single-finger clicking |
| 5–6.5 | Average | Standard index-finger clicking |
| 6.5–8 | Solid | Tensed-forearm regular clicking |
| 8–10 | Rapid | Jitter clicking |
| 10–12 | Cheetah | Clean butterfly clicking |
| 12+ | Godlike | Optimized butterfly / drag clicking |
Clicking techniques explained
- Regular clicking (4–7 CPS): one finger, full press-release cycles. Most accurate for actual aiming.
- Jitter clicking (8–12 CPS): tense your forearm so your hand vibrates onto the button. High CPS, poor aim control — and hard on the wrist, so keep sessions short (see mouse-arm stretches).
- Butterfly clicking (10–15 CPS): alternate index and middle finger on the same button. Banned by some Minecraft servers; check rules before relying on it.
- Drag clicking (15–30+ CPS): drag a finger across a textured button so friction fires multiple micro-clicks. Works only on specific mice and is its own rabbit hole.
Does CPS matter for FPS games?
Less than you'd think, more than zero. Tap-firing semi-auto weapons (Valorant's Guardian, CS2's pistols and the FAMAS burst cadence) rewards 6–8 controlled CPS, and Minecraft PvP genuinely rewards 10+. But in tactical shooters, accuracy at 5 CPS beats spray at 12 CPS — your first-bullet placement decides the duel. Use this test for fun benchmarks and warmup, then put the real training minutes into gridshot and the flick trainer.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good CPS score?
6.5 CPS is the average gamer on a 10-second test. 8+ is rapid, 10+ usually means butterfly or jitter technique, and 12+ is exceptional.
Why does my CPS drop on the 30-second mode?
Forearm fatigue. CPS tests are anaerobic — most people lose 15–25% of their 5-second pace by second 30. That's normal and exactly why the longer mode exists as an endurance benchmark.
Is butterfly clicking cheating?
Not here, and not in most games. Some Minecraft servers cap CPS or ban drag clicking — check the server rules. In FPS games it's irrelevant: nothing useful fires above ~8 effective CPS.
Does double-click hardware inflate scores?
A worn or 'double-clicking' mouse switch can register extra clicks. If your peak burst looks impossibly high versus your average, your switch may be double-firing.
Does the timer punish a late start?
No — the countdown ends but the round timer only starts on your first click, so your score reflects pure clicking speed.
