A flick shot is a fast, reactive mouse movement that snaps your crosshair onto a target and fires in a single fluid motion. It is the aim skill that produces highlight-reel kills, but more importantly it is the skill that wins duels when an enemy appears outside your crosshair placement. Here is how to train it so the improvement actually transfers to ranked play.

Flick aim is one of three core FPS aim skills alongside tracking and micro-adjustment. A balanced routine trains all three.

What Makes a Flick Work

Flick aiming relies on a motor pattern called ballistic movement: your brain calculates the distance and direction to the target, fires a fast arm or wrist motion, and commits to the trajectory without mid-flight correction. The click happens at the end of the motion, not after a pause to verify. That commitment is what makes flicks fast. Hesitation or mid-flick correction slows the entire action down and adds error.

Your brain improves this distance estimation through repetition. Each flick attempt provides feedback (hit or miss, overshot or undershot) that your motor cortex uses to calibrate the next attempt. This is why consistent sensitivity matters: changing your sensitivity resets the calibration and forces your brain to relearn distances.

Drill Structure for Real Improvement

Start each session with slow, deliberate flicks. Targets appear at random angles and your only goal is to land on the center of each target before clicking. Speed is not the objective here; precision is. Spend three minutes at this pace to establish the motor pattern cleanly.

After three minutes, increase your speed to roughly 70% of your maximum. Accuracy should stay above 50%. If it drops below that, you are clicking before your flick arrives, which trains imprecision. Spend another three to four minutes at this pace. Then push to full speed for the final two minutes. Flick Distance and Sensitivity

Your effective flick range depends on your sensitivity. Low-sensitivity players (30+ cm/360) produce accurate flicks within a narrow cone around their crosshair because their arm has to travel farther for wide angles. High-sensitivity players (15-20 cm/360) can flick to wider angles but sacrifice fine-grain precision at small adjustments.

Neither extreme is wrong, but you should train the flick distances you actually encounter in your game. In Valorant and CS2, most duels happen within a 30-degree cone of your crosshair placement. If your crosshair placement is disciplined, you rarely need to flick more than 45 degrees. Train that range hard. Spending time flicking 180 degrees is fun but rarely relevant in tactical shooters.

Mistakes That Block Progress

The most destructive habit is clicking too early. If you click before your crosshair reaches the target, you train your brain to fire at the wrong moment. Every premature click reinforces the incorrect timing. Slow down, land the crosshair, then click. Speed comes naturally as the motor pattern solidifies.

Another common error is training only one flick direction. Most players naturally flick better to one side (usually toward their dominant hand). Deliberately practice flicks in all directions, including upward and downward angles, so your ability is symmetrical. In-game enemies do not only appear on your comfortable side. A third mistake is never varying target size. Train with large targets to build confidence, then shrink them to build precision. Sticking with one size plateaus your improvement.

Most players notice meaningful improvement after two to three weeks of daily 10-minute sessions. The initial gains come from motor calibration at your sensitivity. Should I use arm aim or wrist aim for flicks?

It depends on flick distance. Large flicks covering 45 degrees or more are more accurate with arm movement. Small flicks under 20 degrees work well with wrist movement. Many players use a hybrid approach: arm for the big motion and wrist for the final adjustment.

Does flick training help with tracking aim?

Not directly. Flicking and tracking use different motor patterns. Flicks are ballistic (single fast movement), while tracking is smooth and sustained. Both are valuable, but training one does not automatically improve the other. A complete routine includes both drill types.

What accuracy percentage should I aim for in drills?
